Discover Bournemouth

Bournemouth is one of the most stunning coastal towns in the south of England and is famous for its seven-mile stretch of award-winning sandy beaches.

Offering you the option for a peaceful life by the sea or a lively and dynamic lifestyle, Bournemouth has the perfect blend of both. You’ll find picturesque parks, countryside and outdoor spaces right on your doorstep, including ten stunning nature reserves. The New Forest and Jurassic Coast are also just a few miles away.

Bournemouth has an animated nightlife, with lots of LGBTQI+ friendly venues, pubs, bars and nightclubs to visit, as well as the BH2 entertainment complex which is home to a cinema, restaurants and other fun leisure activities. Don’t forget a trip to Bournemouth pier – an unmissable attraction with stunning sea views as well as some fantastic eateries.

The student experience in Bournemouth is second to none and we benefit from working in partnership with Bournemouth University to offer the ResLifeBU programme.

The programme operates around three core aims: to help you recognise and develop those skills you need for your new independent life at BU; to offer you a diverse and inclusive range of social activities, so you can connect and form life-long friendships; and finally, because things don’t always go to plan, to provide you with wellbeing support if and when you need it.

Places to explore

Living in Bournemouth means you are in easy reach of some great attractions, both within the town or just a short trip away.

Beaches

Once your studies are done for the day, head down to the beach for some rest and relaxation in the sunshine. There are seven miles of award-winning coastline in Bournemouth, including beaches such as Alum Chine, Durley Chine, Fisherman's Walk, Manor Steps and Southbourne.

Boscombe

Boscombe is only two miles from Bournemouth's town centre. The seaside town is known for its market selling plenty of food, drinks and souvenirs. Head over to this town for a change of scenery and enjoy the local character.

Christchurch

Choosing what to visit when offered historic quays, harbours, beaches, nature reserves as well as the Priory Church & Castle will be your biggest challenge with Christchurch. Those of you who prefer to get an aquatic fix further in land will enjoy two substantial rivers, the River Avon and Stour where you can enjoy scenic walks and water-based activities.

Poole

Poole’s crown jewel – the second largest natural harbour in the world – hosts some of the most breathtaking scenery and wildlife. There’s red squirrels on Brownsea Island, traveling to Monkey World, or diving into the hectares of heath and forested land you’ll not struggle to find something to do or see here. Whether it’s Upton Country Park, Corfe Castle, the Quay, Old Harry Rocks or Sandbanks at sunset; there’s every reason to keep a camera to hand and most of the day free to explore!

How to get around

If you’re looking for a day out further afield, Bournemouth has convenient transport links to London, Salisbury, Winchester and more.

Bus

Your Unibus pass won’t just get you to your lectures and home again, you can use it to head to Poole, Winton, and Christchurch quickly. Other services can help if you fancy a day out a bit further afield, with bus routes to the neighbouring towns of Salisbury, Swanage and the Purbecks.

Boat

Being a student in Bournemouth has lots of unique benefits, including having access to ocean views and ferries ready to whisk you away for a day trip. You can sign up for a guided tour of Poole Harbour, take a trip to some of the islands within it or even hire small dinghies, RIBs or jet skis!
