Discover Salford

The city of Salford is situated in the heart of Greater Manchester and just one mile from Manchester city centre.

Salford is a distinctive city, in that it’s both historic and up-and-coming. It is a lively and diverse city, with people from all backgrounds coming to live and study. Despite having over 200 listed buildings, don’t be fooled into thinking that this city is in the past.

The city centre is within walking distance of our Salford Student Village and can also be accessed easily on public transport or by car. As well as being on the doorstep of Manchester’s nightlife and restaurants, Salford also has its own great selection of local pubs and bars to unwind in.

Greater Manchester is proud to be LGBTQI+ friendly. From Salford University’s support of their LGBTQI+ students to Manchester’s hugely popular Gay Village and its renowned annual Pride Parade Weekend.

For history lovers, there are some fantastic cultural destinations to visit in Salford and Manchester, including the Manchester Museum, People’s History Museum, the Museum of Science & Industry, and the Imperial War Museum North. The Salford Museum & Art Gallery and the Working Class Movement Library can also be found on the University of Salford campus.

Our Salford student accommodation village at Peel Park Quarter is located on the campus, while the John Lester and Eddie Colman Court accommodation is a short walk away.

Places to explore

Salford itself is becoming a hub for investment and regeneration. A city that is constantly evolving, you won’t be short on things to do.

Manchester city centre

You’re just a half-hour walk or 15-minute bus ride to Manchester. Enjoy a world of food, drinks, nightlife and entertainment on your doorstep.

Salford Quays

England’s media capital is as much about leisure as it is business. If you’re able to take your eyes off the breath-taking waterfront for long enough, you’ll be able to see the Lowry gallery and shopping centre, as well as MediaCityUK, the home of the BBC and ITV. With modern bars, restaurants, and a theatre, the Quays make for the perfect summer day out.

Northern Quarter

Just a short journey from Salford, the Northern Quarter in Manchester City Centre is home to cute and quirky shops, businesses and bars. You can spend hours wandering around, taking in some street art and browsing Afflecks - a warehouse filled with independent traders.

Spinningfields

Spinningfields is home to some of the North West’s most popular bars, restaurants and shops, along with a commercial district that some of the largest corporations in the region call home. With easy access to the canals, this area is perfect for a summer walk, and a drink or two.

Trafford

The home of Manchester United football club and the third-largest shopping centre in the UK. The Trafford Centre is a huge shopping complex where you can spend hours browsing the high street’s favourite stores. Visit the cinema, a restaurant, or a bar too. There’s even a Laserquest if you’re feeling competitive!

How to get around

The excellent transport throughout Greater Manchester helps ensure that you’re never too far from home. Salford’s links are there to let you explore without ever getting lost. And when you’re not out navigating the county, buses are here to take you to the campus and the quays.

Bus

Manchester and Salford’s bus routes can get you just about anywhere cheaply and easily. Buses run all the way from our accommodation, past the University of Salford, and down to MediaCityUK. These can even expand to Manchester’s city centre.

Tram

The tram puts you just a card-tap away from fast and comfortable transport. With one scheduled every 12 minutes across the board, the tram’s smooth and scenic ride gives you time to relax while getting around.

Train

If you’re ever looking to travel a bit further, there are two well-connected train stations nearby. Salford Central and Salford Crescent can carry you all around the north so that you don’t have to miss anything during your studies.
